New Fortress Energy Sells Jamaican Assets to Excelerate Energy: A New Chapter for Jamaica’s Energy Future
In a significant move for Jamaica’s energy landscape, New Fortress Energy (NFE) has officially agreed to sell its Jamaican assets to Excelerate Energy for a whopping $1.055 billion. This deal is not just about numbers; it represents a strategic shift in how energy is produced and consumed on the island.
What’s Included in the Deal?
The sale encompasses several key assets, including NFE’s LNG import terminal in Montego Bay, an offshore floating storage and regasification terminal in Old Harbour, and a 150-megawatt combined heat and power plant in Clarendon. These facilities have been pivotal in transforming Jamaica’s energy sector, moving it away from oil dependency and towards more sustainable options.
Wes Edens, Chairman and CEO of NFE, expressed pride in the company’s contributions to Jamaica’s energy transition. “We are confident that Excelerate will continue to drive meaningful progress for Jamaica’s energy future,” he stated. This sentiment resonates with many Jamaicans who have witnessed the positive changes in energy reliability and costs since NFE’s entry into the market in 2016.
A Financial Boost for NFE
The proceeds from this sale will be used to reduce NFE’s corporate debt and support general corporate purposes. This financial maneuver is part of a broader strategy to optimize NFE’s asset portfolio and enhance its financial flexibility. The deal has already received unanimous approval from the boards of both companies, with expectations for closure as early as Q2 2025, pending regulatory approvals.
Excelerate Energy’s Vision
For Excelerate Energy, this acquisition is a significant step in its growth strategy. Steven Kobos, President and CEO, highlighted that the deal will diversify their platform and solidify their position as a key player in the Atlantic basin’s natural gas market. “This transaction represents an important milestone in the execution of Excelerate’s downstream growth strategy,” he noted, emphasizing the long-term cash flows and stable margins that come with the deal.
The Heart of Jamaica’s Energy Infrastructure
The Montego Bay terminal, commissioned in 2016, has been a game-changer for the island. With a capacity of 740,000 gallons, it supplies LNG to the 145-megawatt Bogue power plant and various industrial customers. Meanwhile, the Old Harbour facility, featuring a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU), serves as a regional energy hub, supplying LNG to the Jamaica Public Service Company’s 190-megawatt power plant.
The FSRU Höegh Gallant, which has been serving the terminal since 2021, boasts a capacity of 170,000 cubic meters. This infrastructure is crucial for ensuring that Jamaica has a reliable and efficient energy supply.
Looking Ahead
As the energy landscape continues to evolve, both NFE and Excelerate Energy are poised for new opportunities. NFE is already making headlines with a new deal to supply natural gas for a 478 MW combined-cycle power plant in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Meanwhile, Excelerate is expanding its reach, recently partnering with Vietnam’s PV Gas to source LNG from the U.S.
