Celebrating Jamaican Hospitality: Christopher Issa Shines at ITB Berlin
In a remarkable showcase of Caribbean talent, Jamaican hotelier Christopher Issa has garnered international acclaim for his contributions to tourism. At the prestigious ITB Awards in Berlin, he received the 2026 Pacific Area Travel Writers Association (PATWA) International Travel Award for Excellence in Hospitality Innovation. This recognition is not just a personal triumph; it highlights the vibrant spirit of Jamaican hospitality on a global stage.
A Boutique Brand on the Rise
Issa, who serves as CEO of S Hotels Jamaica, led his brand to win the PATWA award for Best Boutique Hotels – Authentic Experiences (Caribbean). This accolade reinforces S Hotels’ growing reputation for offering culturally immersive experiences that resonate with visitors. The awards were presented on March 4 during the PATWA World Tourism Leaders’ Summit, held alongside ITB Berlin, one of the largest travel trade exhibitions worldwide.
Reflecting on his achievement, Issa shared with The Gleaner, “This is the second individual award that I have received, and it really is quite meaningful. Our team has worked very hard to represent Jamaica’s tourism sector, and to be recognised for hospitality innovation is a special moment for me.”
Transforming Kingston’s Landscape
Issa’s journey in the hospitality industry began in 2009 when he transformed the former Spanish Court Shopping Centre in New Kingston into the Spanish Court Hotel. This 125-room property marked Kingston’s first new hotel in over four decades and set the standard for boutique hotels in the city. The hotel quickly gained international acclaim, earning accolades like Expedia’s VIP Award for Best Hotel in the Caribbean, and played a pivotal role in repositioning Kingston as a cultural hotspot.
Embracing Jamaican Culture
In 2016, Issa expanded his vision to Montego Bay, redeveloping the former Breezes resort into S Hotel Montego Bay. This contemporary beachfront property beautifully marries modern design with elements of Jamaican art, music, and heritage. Visitors can enjoy curated tributes to the island’s culture, from Bob Marley vinyl record players in hotel rooms to striking installations like a 46-foot doctor bird sculpture and a 12-foot artwork of Usain Bolt.
“We have tried to infuse our properties not just with Jamaican warmth, but with Jamaican culture,” Issa explained, emphasizing the importance of authenticity in the guest experience.
Fostering Innovation and Community
Innovation is not just about aesthetics; it’s woven into the very fabric of the company’s culture. Staff members are encouraged to propose ideas to enhance guest experiences, with adopted suggestions rewarded. This philosophy is encapsulated in one of the company’s guiding principles: “The road to success is always under construction.”
Beyond hospitality, S Hotels is committed to making a positive impact in local communities. Through its ‘S for Shelters’ initiative, the brand has funded and built 63 homes in western Jamaica for families affected by Hurricane Melissa, showcasing a dedication to social responsibility.
