Nickanya Brown Crowned Miss UWI FSS: A Night of Talent and Empowerment
Last Saturday night, the atmosphere at Chancellor Hall was electric as Nickanya Brown, a bright star from the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of the West Indies (UWI), was crowned Miss UWI FSS. The event was a celebration of beauty, talent, and the incredible potential of young women in the faculty.
Nickanya, a former student of St Jago High School, stood out among seven fierce competitors, showcasing not just her poise but also her passion for social issues. “It’s an honor to represent my faculty and to be a voice for my peers,” she said, beaming with pride after receiving her crown. Her journey to the title was not just about winning; it was about growth and self-discovery.
A Competitive Spirit
The competition was fierce, with Soairse Salmon, who is currently studying International Relations, taking the second spot. Soairse impressed the judges with her articulate responses and her commitment to making a difference in the world. Shae Sinclair, who snagged most of the sectional prizes, secured third place, proving that talent comes in many forms. The other contestants—Adelicia Chin, Sherona Mallette, Christina Bromfield, and Chri-Shann Grant—also brought their A-game, with Grant and Bromfield making it to the top five.
Davian McAnuff, the Faculty of Social Sciences representative on the UWI Guild of Students, shared insights into the purpose of the pageant. “We wanted to showcase the talent that exists within the faculty,” he explained. “This pageant has helped to develop the young ladies who participate, allowing them to grow and shine in their own right.”

The Miss UWI FSS pageant is not merely about crowns and sashes; it’s a platform for empowerment. The participants underwent extensive training and preparation, honing their skills in public speaking, confidence, and self-presentation. “There are quite a few who wanted to develop themselves through this process,” McAnuff added. “I think the objective has been realized.”
