On February 10, 1911, a remarkable figure was born in Byndloss, St Catherine, Jamaica. Mallica Reynolds, known affectionately as ‘Kapo’, would go on to leave an indelible mark on the cultural and spiritual landscape of Jamaica. His life, which spanned nearly eight decades until his passing on February 24, 1989, was characterized by a profound commitment to Revivalism and the arts. Today, as we commemorate the 114th anniversary of his birth, we reflect on the legacy of this extraordinary man.
A Spiritual Awakening
Kapo’s journey into spirituality began at the tender age of 12 when he experienced a religious epiphany that would shape his identity for the rest of his life. Embracing the name ‘Kapo’, he became a prominent figure in the Zion Revival movement, a Jamaican folk religion that emphasizes healing, prophecy, and community. By the age of 16, Kapo had received a vision that propelled him into the role of a preacher, traveling throughout the countryside to share his message. His spiritual journey led him to establish the St Michael’s Revival Apostolic Tabernacle in Trench Town, later relocating to Olympic Gardens, where he became a respected leader and patriarch bishop until his death.
An Artistic Visionary
Kapo was not only a spiritual leader but also a gifted artist whose work transcended traditional boundaries. Despite lacking formal training in theology or the arts, he gained recognition both locally and internationally for his contributions. Among these honors were a gold medal from Emperor Haile Selassie during his visit to Jamaica in 1966, a Silver Musgrave Medal from the Institute of Jamaica in 1969, and the Order of Distinction by the Government of Jamaica in 1977. In 1981, his painting “Shining Spring” was chosen as a wedding gift for Prince Charles and Lady Diana, further cementing his status as a representative of true Jamaican art.

In February 2018, the NGJ hosted a special event titled ‘21st-Century Kapo’ in observance of Black History Month. As we gather today at 6 p.m. in National Heroes Park, Kingston, to commemorate Kapo’s birth, we honor not only his artistic and spiritual contributions but also the enduring impact he has had on Jamaican culture. Hosted by Minister of Culture, Gender and Sport Olivia Grange, the event invites attendees to reflect on Kapo’s life and legacy, ensuring that his spirit continues to inspire future generations.
