Jamaican-Canadian Entrepreneur Starts Cultural Marketing Agency for Caribbean Brands

Jamaican Brands: Time to Shine on the Global Stage

KINGSTON, Jamaica—Adion Communications, a multicultural marketing agency based in Canada, is making a passionate plea for Jamaican and Caribbean brands to prioritize international marketing as a key part of their growth strategy.

“Jamaican brands have cultural power and global appeal,” says Shannon Castonguay, a Jamaican-born cultural marketing strategist and founder of Adion Communications. “But influence alone isn’t enough.” She points out that while Caribbean products are gaining traction in export channels, many brands are missing out on sustained marketing efforts overseas. This lack of visibility can lead to weakened competitiveness and lost revenue opportunities.

The Risk of Being Invisible

Castonguay emphasizes that to compete on the international stage, brands must actively engage with their markets. “If not, they risk becoming invisible, lost on crowded shelves where competitors are doing the work.” This is a crucial point. In a world where consumers are bombarded with choices, standing out is essential.

One of her key observations is that when Caribbean brands fail to market themselves effectively, inauthentic products quickly fill the void. “Products that merely bear Jamaican colors or claim to have ‘Caribbean flavor’ receive traction that would have otherwise gone to authentic Caribbean brands,” she explains. This reality fuels her mission to champion genuine Caribbean products and market them in ways that honor their cultural roots.

A Call for Authenticity

Adion Communications is dedicated to supporting Caribbean brands in establishing a stronger international presence. They focus on culturally grounded strategies, digital marketing, brand storytelling, and experiential activations. “For far too long, we’ve relied on nostalgia,” Castonguay notes. “Global brands tailor their messages for each country they enter. Coca-Cola is a prime example; they adapt their marketing year after year, never resting in complacency.”

This approach is vital for Caribbean brands looking to expand. They need to navigate global markets without diluting their identity. Castonguay believes that expansion strategies should honor brand heritage while meeting international consumer expectations.

The Jamaican Spirit of Tenacity

Having spent years living in Jamaica and working with various Jamaican brands, Castonguay understands the tenacity that defines Jamaican culture. “I know the level of diligence with which we operate,” she says. “To see that same diligence neglected here in Canada does a disservice to our brands.”

Jamaicans are known for their resilience and creativity, traits that should be reflected in their marketing efforts. “I’ve never known Jamaicans to be small fries; in everything we do, we’ve been a big order,” she adds, highlighting the potential for Jamaican brands to make a significant impact on the global stage.

Looking Ahead

As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, the opportunity for Jamaican and Caribbean brands to shine internationally is ripe for the taking. With the right marketing strategies, these brands can not only compete but thrive. So, what’s stopping them from taking that leap? The time is now for Jamaican brands to step into the spotlight and show the world what they’re made of.
