Jamaica’s Offshore Oil Exploration: What’s Next?
Jamaica is on the edge of a potential energy breakthrough, with Energy Minister Daryl Vaz announcing that the nation could know within two to three months whether recent offshore exploration has uncovered oil and gas. This news has sparked excitement and curiosity among Jamaicans, as the implications for the country’s energy future could be significant.
At a recent post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House, Vaz shared that data and samples collected during the exploration are now en route to a laboratory in the United States for detailed analysis. This step is crucial in determining the geological potential of Jamaica’s offshore resources.
The Exploration Journey
The exploration was carried out by United Oil & Gas PLC, which completed its surface geochemical exploration program on February 28, following an intensive 34 days of offshore work. During this period, a staggering 1,189 line kilometers of echo sounder data were collected, mapping the sea floor across the Walton Basin and Morant Bay Basin.
But that’s not all. The team also used heat flow probes to analyze temperature gradients beneath the seabed and took piston core samples from 42 locations to test for the presence of oil and gas. This comprehensive approach reflects a commitment to understanding Jamaica’s energy landscape.
Safety and Environmental Considerations
Vaz emphasized that the exploration was conducted without any incidents, ensuring that there were no safety issues, environmental accidents, or conflicts with local fisherfolk. “This is simply not a technical exercise. It is a meaningful step towards understanding the geological potential of offshore Jamaica,” he stated.
As the government awaits the lab results, Vaz reassured the public of a responsible, science-based approach to exploration. “Exploration does not mean exploitation without safeguards. It means gathering facts, analyzing data, and making informed decisions in the best interest of Jamaica,” he added.
A Call for Patience
While the excitement builds, Vaz urged the public to remain patient and calm. “I caution everybody to be patient and calm and to listen to the Government on this very sensitive matter,” he said. He reminded citizens that it will take two to three months before any official updates are available, whether positive or negative.
Engaging the Community
In a related development, United Oil & Gas PLC has launched a new internal technical podcast titled On the Rocks. This podcast aims to provide shareholders and stakeholders with a closer look at the geological case for oil exploration around Jamaica. The first episode features Business Technical Manager Paul Ryan and Head of Business Development Donal Meehan discussing what they describe as “strong indicators of a working petroleum system offshore Jamaica.”
Meehan pointed out, “There’s really just an awful lot of evidence there.” He highlighted the combination of satellite data, seismic interpretation, and rock analysis that suggests a promising petroleum system both offshore and onshore.
