Bridging Borders: Jamaica and Cuba Unite in Oncology Insights
HAVANA, Cuba — On April 25, the vibrant city of Havana became a hub of medical collaboration as the Jamaican delegation participated in the 5th International Convention Cuba Salud 2025. This event, dedicated to the exchange of knowledge in oncology, saw Jamaican health officials visiting the National Institute of Oncology and Radiobiology, a leading center in cancer treatment and research.
A Warm Welcome and Knowledge Exchange
As the Jamaican representatives stepped into the institute, they were greeted by Cuban doctors eager to share insights about cancer treatment in Cuba. Yuliet Martinez Carrasco, the deputy director of Medical Assistance at the institute, highlighted the comprehensive approach Cuba takes in battling cancer. “We have a national network that includes four specialized hospitals and five oncology units,” she explained, emphasizing the importance of accessibility in healthcare.
Cuba’s Comprehensive Cancer Care
Martinez Carrasco detailed the extensive resources available in Cuba for cancer patients. With 29 services in provincial hospitals and nine radiotherapy departments, the country has built a robust framework for cancer care. “Our institution is not just about treatment; we focus on introducing and evaluating new technologies through clinical and epidemiological research,” she noted. This commitment to innovation is a cornerstone of Cuba’s healthcare philosophy.
A Shared Commitment to Health
Errol Greene, the permanent secretary of Jamaica’s Ministry of Health, expressed gratitude for the collaboration. “This space for fraternization and knowledge is vital for us,” he said, acknowledging Jamaica’s ongoing challenges with medical personnel shortages. The partnership with Cuba has been instrumental in providing support, with around 400 Cuban professionals currently serving in various regions of Jamaica.

Melody Ennis, director of Jamaica’s National Electronic Immunization Registry, echoed Greene’s sentiments. “Participating in Cuba Salud has opened doors for exchanges with professionals from around the world,” she remarked.
