BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — After seven years of serving mouthwatering Jamaican cuisine, Barrington’s Jamaican Kitchen is preparing to close its doors on Ming Avenue. The news has left many in the community heartbroken, as owner Barrington Lewis has become a cherished figure known for his delicious food and warm spirit.
Barrington’s journey to becoming a restaurant owner is a testament to resilience and passion. "I’ve always loved cooking," Lewis shared. "When I got fired from my job, I decided to pursue something I really, really love." Initially, he began cooking at home and giving away his meals. "People started saying, ‘Man, you need to open up a restaurant. Your food is really, really, really good,’" he recalled with a smile.
Despite the restaurant’s popularity, the pandemic brought unforeseen challenges. Lewis faced significant financial difficulties, including borrowing from predatory lenders. "Before the pandemic, everything was okay," he explained. "But after, I realized I made some mistakes, and I got into a hole really, really bad." The rising costs of ingredients added to his struggles. "Chicken that used to cost 99 cents a pound is now $2.99. Inflation has hit hard, and I tried to keep my prices the same," he lamented.
The community’s response to the impending closure has been overwhelmingly supportive. Residents have taken to social media to express their sadness and share fond memories. Lewis has found a new opportunity at an indoor swap meet on Brundage Lane, where he plans to open a larger, fully furnished location on April 1st. "I went over there and looked at the spot. I got really excited," he said, reflecting on the potential for a fresh start. "I always think everything happens for a reason."
Lewis remains committed to giving back to the community that has supported him. "At the end of the day, at 8 o’clock at night, the homeless people around here know they can come get a free plate because I don’t throw food in the trash," he shared. "I give because I know what it feels like to have nothing." His generosity has made a lasting impact, and many in Bakersfield are grateful for his kindness.
