Reggae Artist Determine, Renowned for ‘Kette Drum,’ Passes Away at 52

Remembering Determine: The Reggae Icon Who Touched Hearts

Reggae music has lost one of its shining stars. Rohan Bennett, known to the world as Determine, passed away at the age of 52 after a brave battle with stomach cancer. His manager and the mother of three of his children, Paula Francis, confirmed the heartbreaking news on Thursday. The reggae community is mourning the loss of an artist whose music resonated deeply with fans across the globe.

Determine is perhaps best known for his iconic 1995 hit, "Kette Drum." This track, produced by the legendary Bobby Digital, was a Nyabinghi-inspired anthem that captured the essence of reggae. Featuring the unique vocals of Beenie Man alongside Determine’s raw and rustic delivery, "Kette Drum" became a defining moment in reggae history. It charted worldwide, bringing the sounds of Jamaica to a broader audience and solidifying Determine’s place in the music scene.

While "Kette Drum" remains his signature hit, Determine’s career was rich with collaborations and performances that showcased his talent. He had a special connection with the Marley family, touring with Ghetto Youths International (GYI), a label led by Stephen Marley. His first tour with the Marleys was in 2014, during the Fruits Of Life Tour, where he shared the stage with some of reggae’s finest. His single "Passenger," produced by Damian Marley, further highlighted his ability to blend his unique style with the legendary Marley sound.

Determine’s journey with Ghetto Youths International began in the late 1990s, a time when the label was still finding its footing. His debut track for the label, "Blinging And Blanging," introduced him to a wider audience and set the stage for his future successes. It was a pivotal moment that allowed him to showcase his artistry and connect with fans on a deeper level.

"Kette Drum" was a landmark in Determine’s career, emerging just a year after he began recording. It was one of the biggest reggae hits of 1995, a year that also saw the release of Luciano’s "It’s Me Again Jah" and Buju Banton’s monumental album, "‘Til Shiloh." The music scene was vibrant, and Determine’s contribution added to the rich tapestry of reggae during that time.

Despite his untimely passing, Determine’s legacy is firmly etched in the annals of reggae music. His songs continue to inspire and influence new generations of artists. As one fan put it, “His music was like a heartbeat for many of us. It spoke to our struggles and our joys.”

As we reflect on Determine’s life and contributions, we are reminded of the power of music to unite and heal. His journey may have ended, but the rhythms and messages he shared will continue to echo in the hearts of fans and musicians alike. What will you remember most about this reggae legend?
