Celebrating the Legacy of Sly Dunbar: A Tribute to a Drumming Legend
This weekend, Jamaica’s vibrant music community will come together to honor the life and legacy of the legendary drummer Sly Dunbar. The Government, through the Ministry of Gender, Culture, Entertainment and Sport, has organized a series of heartfelt tribute events in Kingston, ensuring that the spirit of this iconic musician resonates throughout the island.
Minister Olivia Grange announced a touching program that includes a public viewing, a commemorative motorcade, and an official funeral service. “Sly Dunbar is one of the best drummers the world has ever seen,” Grange remarked, emphasizing the importance of this tribute as an opportunity for Jamaicans to reflect on Dunbar’s extraordinary contributions to reggae and the global music scene.
The official funeral service is set for Saturday, March 7, at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity on George Headley Drive. Before that, on Friday, March 6, fans and friends can pay their respects during a public viewing at the National Indoor Sports Centre in Kingston. This will be a chance for many to come together, share stories, and celebrate a man whose rhythms have touched countless lives.
Friday’s observances will also feature a special motorcade that kicks off at Channel One Studio. The procession will make stops at iconic locations like One Pop Music Studio, Mixing Lab Studio, and Anchor Recording Studio—places that played pivotal roles in shaping Jamaica’s recording industry. These studios are where Dunbar’s drumming helped create some of the most memorable tracks in reggae history.
Born Lowell Fillmore Dunbar, he rose to fame as one half of the legendary duo Sly and Robbie, alongside bassist Robbie Shakespeare. Together, they became one of the most prolific rhythm teams in music history, recording thousands of tracks that redefined reggae and dancehall. Their innovative approach introduced the powerful “Rockers” rhythm style, which transformed reggae in the late 1970s.
Dunbar’s influence can be heard on landmark albums by artists like Black Uhuru and Peter Tosh. The tight, driving drum-and-bass partnership of Sly and Robbie became a signature sound that defined an era. They also created iconic riddims like the “Baltimore” riddim, associated with The Tamlins’ classic track, and the “Taxi” riddim, which powered numerous hits through their Taxi label.
