Peckish Takes Root: A Flavorful Journey in Pullman Yards
This month, Peckish in Pullman Yards has officially announced its permanent stay, unveiling a new dinner menu that promises to tantalize taste buds and celebrate culinary heritage. What began as a pop-up by chef Tamara Hewitt has blossomed into a beloved fixture in Atlanta’s vibrant brunch scene, and now it’s ready to take dinner by storm.
A Launchpad for Dreams
Since 2021, Pullman Yards has served as a nurturing ground for small business owners and emerging restaurateurs. The residency program has provided a platform for culinary talents to showcase their visions, and Peckish’s graduation is a testament to the strength of this initiative. “Every milestone we’ve reached is because people showed up, spread the word, and believed in what we’re building,” Hewitt expressed, highlighting the community’s vital role in her journey.
A Taste of Heritage
The new dinner menu is a delightful fusion of Hewitt’s Jamaican roots and Southern flavors. Picture this: jerk chicken wings that marry Caribbean warmth with a hint of barbecue sweetness. “I like to take familiar flavors and give them a twist,” she shared in an interview with the Technique, emphasizing her creative approach to cooking.
Peckish specializes in tapas and small bites, perfect for sharing. Among the playful dishes are avocado panna cotta, tamarind-glazed pork belly, and oxtail empanadas. One standout dish is the mussels, infused with coconut, wine, piri piri, and mango. “It’s layered, comforting, and very ‘Peckish,’” Hewitt said, clearly proud of this culinary creation.
Sharing is Caring
For those looking to indulge, the larger sharing options include Jamaican favorites like fried escovitch, curry goat, and braised oxtail. There’s also a twist on traditional dishes, such as the butterflied sweet plantains served with red onion, crumbled feta, fried panko, and chimichurri sauce.
The Peckish Tower, designed for two, is a feast for the senses. It starts with sweet plantains and curry cornbread, followed by two tapas and one main dish, all accompanied by coconut-infused rice and peas. And don’t forget dessert!
Sweet Temptations
At the entrance, a stunning glass case showcases Hewitt’s sculpted desserts, including potted plant-shaped chocolate mousse and moon-shaped lemon cheesecake. The Baby Banana, a banana-shaped pudding, is a nostalgic nod to her childhood favorite.
Sipping in Style
The cocktail menu is equally enticing, weaving tropical flavors like hibiscus, pineapple, and mango into familiar American drinks. The Starboard Light, a reinvented whiskey sour, features passionfruit, honey, and egg white, while the Sky Juice gets a Caribbean twist with nutmeg and butterfly pea flower.
A Welcoming Atmosphere
Peckish’s dining room flows into a vibrant patio bar and outdoor terrace, creating an inviting space for guests to mingle and enjoy their meals. “Trust your voice and lean into your story,” Hewitt advises aspiring restaurateurs, reminding them that authenticity is key.
Peckish is open from 5-10 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends. For the latest updates on menu offerings and events, follow them on Instagram at @peckish_atl.
