Scheduled for August 21–22, this two-day event promises to be a lively celebration of identity, resilience, and rebirth, showcasing the rich tapestry of Jamaican culture through Stewart-Josephs’ unique lens.

A Journey Back to Jamaica

For Stewart-Josephs, ROOTED is more than just an exhibition; it’s a heartfelt homecoming. After years of honing her craft abroad, she returns to Jamaica’s vibrant art scene, bringing with her a wealth of experience and inspiration. Growing up in the cool hills of Manchester, Stewart-Josephs discovered her passion for drawing and painting at a young age. “Those formative years in Jamaica shaped who I am as an artist,” she reflects. “The lush landscapes and cultural traditions are woven into every piece I create.”

Her artistic journey began in earnest when she briefly attended the Edna Manley School of Art in Jamaica and the Visual School of Arts in New York City. Despite her formal education, it was her self-taught skills that truly flourished. Early on, she caught the eye of art critic Ansel Walters, who invited her to join the Trafalgar Artist Cooperative. This group of passionate artists operated a roadside gallery along Trafalgar Road in Kingston during the 1970s, providing a platform for local talent.

Celebrating Heritage Through Art

Stewart-Josephs’ work has garnered international acclaim, including her participation in the 2021 virtual exhibition Art in August, organized by the Port Authority of NY and NJ. Now, with ROOTED, she unveils 21 brand-new pieces that beautifully intertwine traditional and contemporary Jamaican art forms.
