Tributes Flow for Jolene Thurton, Beloved Owner of Pepper’s Jamaican Food, Following Her Passing

Remembering Jolene Thurton: A Light Extinguished Too Soon

Jolene Thurton, the vibrant owner of Pepper’s Jamaican-Belizean Cuisine in Los Angeles, tragically passed away on July 17, 2025. Her unresponsive body was discovered in the 1200 block of West 87th Street, and despite efforts to revive her, she was pronounced dead at the hospital. The news has sent shockwaves through the community, leaving many to mourn the loss of a beloved figure.

A Life Cut Short

Jolene’s family alleges that she was stabbed during an altercation with someone described as a "provoking energy" in her life. Her cousin, Isabell "Izzy" Requena, shared with local journalist SlausonGirl that the incident was unexpected and deeply troubling. "It was an altercation; they fought, and the other person stabbed my relative," she explained. Izzy also mentioned that police moved Jolene’s body before taking her to the hospital, raising questions about the handling of the situation.

A Visionary and a Mother

At a press conference held at Pepper’s, Jolene’s sister, Ronnie, delivered a heartfelt tribute, calling her a "visionary" who inspired women and children in her community. "Jolene Tessa Thurton was more than just a beautiful face. She was a proud entrepreneur, actress, and the heart behind Pepper’s Jamaican-Belizean cuisine," Ronnie said. Her words painted a picture of a woman who not only ran a successful restaurant but also uplifted those around her.

"Her legacy lives on through every life she touched," Ronnie continued, emphasizing Jolene’s role as a mother and a community leader. The love she shared was boundless, and her spirit will continue to inspire others.

Community Response and Ongoing Investigation

During the press conference, Jolene’s mother described her daughter as a peaceful person who brought the family together. "She never had any problems with others," she stated, highlighting Jolene’s dedication to her restaurant and her community. However, Izzy reiterated the need for caution around "provoking energies," urging others to be mindful of their surroundings.

While the family has chosen not to accept donations for Jolene’s funeral, they have launched a GoFundMe campaign to support her 11-year-old son, Endon. The goal is to raise $18,000 for his education and emotional care during this difficult time.

Conflicting Reports

Adding to the complexity of the situation, reports from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau suggest that Jolene may have been shot, as there were reports of gunfire in the area at the time of her death. However, her family remains steadfast in their belief that she was stabbed. The police have yet to release any descriptions of a suspect, and the investigation is ongoing.

As the community grapples with this heartbreaking loss, many are left wondering: How can we prevent such tragedies in the future? Jolene Thurton’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of surrounding ourselves with positivity and love.
